Facial skin usually shows the effects of age before any other part of the body. Many factors can contribute to the appearance of age in facial skin, including sun exposure, an unhealthy lifestyle and heredity. Facial skin can also be damaged by medical conditions such as acne, pigment spots and chronic rosaceous (redness of the skin). Today there are a wide variety of facial skin rejuvenation treatments
that can be used to restore skin to a more healthy and youthful appearance. These treatments range from non-invasive procedures to cosmetic surgery.

      1. Botox is a well-known facial rejuvenation treatment that can reduce the appearance
of fine lines and wrinkles, especially in the forehead area between the eyes. Botox is a
substance that is injected into the skin to immobilize targeted facial muscles. When muscles are prevented from contracting, the appearance of the face is smoother and more youthful. Botox is derived from the deadly toxin that causes botulism, but has been thoroughly tested and approved by the FDA as safe for patients between the ages of 18 and 65. The effects of Botox are temporary and disappear within a few months.

Dermal Fillers

      2. Dermal filler rejuvenation treatments involve the injection of a substance into lines and creases on the face. The filler adds volume to the face below the surface of the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and sagging. A few different substances are used as dermal fillers, including collagen and hyaluronic acid. Collagen is a natural substance that occurs in the body but diminishes with age. Products such as Zyplast and Cosmoderm are collagen fillers that provide effective rejuvenation for three to six months. Hyaluronic acid, which is found in the Juvederm and Restylane products, has none of the risk of allergy associated with collagen and is effective for six months.

      3. Thermage is a non-invasive rejuvenation treatment that uses radio frequencies to stimulate the production of collagen under the skin of the face. Thermage treatments are administered through a hand-held device that pulses radio frequencies beneath the skin, producing deep heat that triggers increased collagen production. The visible benefits of Thermage increase over time as collagen continues to be produced for several months following treatment. Thermage can reduce signs of aging and is also recommended for treatment of acne scarring. Treatments are usually repeated on an annual basis.

      4. Photofacial is another non-invasive rejuvenation treatment. With photofacial, intense pulsed light (IPL) is used to treat the effects of aging and many other skin conditions, including sun damage, rosaceous and pigment spots. Photofacial treatment involves a hand-held device which emits broadband light in pulses. The photofacial IPL breaks down damaged cells in deep layers of skin and begins the healing process. It also
can stimulate increased collagen production beneath the skin and restore a more youthful appearance. Results vary from patient to patient; there is no general estimate available for how long the benefits of treatment will last. A doctor who is an expert in photofacial should be consulted to determine what could be expected for an individual case.

     5. A trained and experienced dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon should be consulted for recommendations on non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatments. Very often a combination of treatments is used, such as dermal filler with Botox or Thermage. Most of the non-invasive rejuvenation treatments produce temporary benefits and are ineffective against advanced signs of aging. A doctor who specializes in skin rejuvenation will be able to advise if non-invasive treatment will satisfy a patient's requirements or if cosmetic surgery is the best solution.
